During Tuesday’s matchup between the Erie Otters and the Mississauga Steelheads, Otters centerman Connor McDavid — highly touted in the hockey world as being the next big franchise playerfor the NHL — left the game with a right hand and failed to return to the ice.
The injury occurred during a fight between McDavid and Steelheads skater Bryson Cianfrone during the second period, when McDavid missed Cianfrone with a punch and hit the glass.
McDavid received a five-minute major and a game misconduct for the fight, as he removed Cianfrone’s helmet during the scuffle, but still managed to notch two points for the team before leaving the ice permanently.
That brought his tally for the 2014-2015 OHL season to 53 points in 19 games- he’s on pace to surpass even Sidney Crosby’s OHL record from the year before he was drafted first overall by the Pittsburgh Penguins.
There has been no word on the extend of McDavid’s injury, although the center was taken the hospital for x-rays after the game.
Chances are, the skater will simply miss a portion of his final season in the juniors and, with 53 points already this season, he’s in no danger of disappearing into the crowd during his absence.
Top prospects are observed with extra care, though. Hopefully, the skater will make a full recovery and be back on track to amaze everyone next season.
