Hockey players are used to missing games because of serious injuries but serious illnesses are new. For the Anaheim Ducks, the need to deal with the fact that their team is being led by a player who is infectious and cannot be around other human being. No, the Ducks haven’t contracted Ebola, but they do have the mumps which — is apparently still possible in modern society.

If you don’t know what mumps is, it’s a contagious and infectious viral disease that causes swelling of the parotid salivary glands in the face. Basically, it’s nasty business that makes you look like you got hit in the face with a puck, except you can get people sick.

It’s nothing very serious, it is rare to contract but we do have the medication to get rid of them now. The Ducks’ team doctor, Craig Milhouse said that the players will be fine and should be back on the ice in no time.

"The mumps last about a week, the contagious period is about five to seven days after you start getting swollen glands. It’s not more serious [in adults], seems like it hits them a little harder. The body fights it off, it runs its course and it’s over with.”"

No one knows where they got the disease, at least it hasn’t been recorded that they got it from each other, family member or whatever. It should be safe to assume that it was a friend or family member of one of the players.
