As if things couldn’t get any worse in the NFL than losing your second straight game at home to a team that had just been beaten the week before by three touchdowns at home themselves. However things did get worse for the New Orleans Saints after the loss when they found out that receiver Brandin Cooks broke his thumb.
The Saints lost their second-leading receiver for the next 2-4 weeks as we head down the final stretch of the 2014 NFL season. Cooks has 53 receptions for 550 yards and three touchdowns this season. Only tight end Jimmy Graham has more receptions for the Saints with 59.
Indeed that is worrisome for the Saints. They are now 4-6 on the season and fell out of first place in the NFC South. The Atlanta Falcons beat the Carolina Panthers 19-17 on Sunday and at 4-6 themselves are in first place because of the head to head tiebreaker with the Saints. They beat the Saints 37-34 in week one.
The Saints have the Baltimore Ravens next week on Monday Night Football and then are home the following week against the improving Pittsburgh Steelers. It’s not going to be an easy road for the Saints in Cooks absence.
