The sweepstakes for Cuban slugger Yasmany Tomas continues to simmer, and the Atlanta Braves and San Diego Padres have emerged as favorites to land the free agent.

Cuban outfielder Yasmany Tomas (also spelled Yasmani, but the correct spelling hasn’t been confirmed by Tomas or his agent) is reportedly seeing a five-to-seven year contract as an MLB free agent, with a $15 million annual salary, and it also appears the Philadelphia Phillies, long rumored as a likely landing spot for the slugger, are no longer considered the favorites for the 24-year old.

MLB.com’s Jessie Sanchez reports that Tomas might make an appearance at the winter meetings with his agent next month, and more interestingly, that the Atlanta Braves and San Diego Padres are the most serious suitors for Tomas, who played five seasons in Cuba’s Serie Nacional, showing a good blend of power and speed.

Tomas has reportedly not ruled out signing a shorted deal with a higher salary value that will allow him to re-enter the free agent market sooner rather than later (and also possibly before he turns 30 years-old). He just turned 24 last week, so any team signing him to a seven-year deal would only have one season past age 30 to worry about, though there isn’t a ton of scouring information available on Tomas due to the United States’s restrictions with Cuba.
