The Washington Redskins gaining ground, still can’t win with RGIII in 17-13 loss to San Francisco 49ers

The Washington Redskins can’t be too embarrassed by the final score tonight — but they still couldn’t squeak out a win.

The 6-4 San Franciso 49ers were the slightly favored team coming into this game, which they hosted in Santa Clara for the 3-7 Redskins. If anything, the simple fact that this game was the ‘make it or break it’ game for recently returned starter Robert Griffin III could potentially put enough pressure on the Redskins to cause a complete collapse — according to ESPN, head coach Jay Gruden openly admitted that the quarterback’s ‘audition period’ had long since passed.

The game started off looking like Gruden would be starting Colt McCoy from this point on, with the Redskins failing to get on the scoreboard until the second quarter. From there, though, they picked up steam, pushing the 49ers down to the final minute.

McCoy could very well start next week regardless of the final score tonight; while the only interception of the game was made against Kaepernick, not RGIII, the Washington franchise failed to keep up with their California opponents. Griffin III surged ahead in rushing, but threw for a devastatingly low 77 yards to fall short of a win.

The game was nowhere close to the blowout beating the Redskins were delivered at the hands of the Tampa Bay Buccaneers this past weekend; the Redskins kept the 49ers scoreless in the third, surging to a tie and briefly surpassing San Francisco for the lead before the NFC West franchise notched an extra touchdown to seal the game.

Once again, though, the players around RGIII looked less than what they need to be; Washington’s offense allowed 5 sacks, while the team’s defense only recorded two.
