The Arizona Diamondbacks haven’t been a good team for a few years, but they landed a massive pillar for their future in signing the next big name Cuban import in Yasmany Tomas.

Yasmany Tomas was the next big name Cuban import to come over to the MLB but he didn’t land in a big market like some of his Cuban brethren. While Jose Abreu is in Chicago, Yasel Puig is in Los Angeles and Rusney Castillo is in Boston, Tomas will be heading to the desert of Arizona to play for the Diamondbacks.

It’s a rather shocking move in that the Diamondbacks are not a big market club by any means, but they just landed a guy who could end up being the Rookie of the Year when 2015 is all said and done.

According to Ken Rosenthal from FOX Sports and MLB Network, the Diamondbacks have agreed to a six-year deal worth $68.5 million.

This is significant in that it gives the Diamondbacks something to build around in the future. Tomas will not help the Diamondbacks make the postseason in 2015, but a season like we saw with Abreu in Chicago might be more realistic. While Chicago missed the playoffs, Abreu was a stud and is a pillar for the future on the South Side.

That’s what Tomas can be for the Diamondbacks, as they have as many as four years to build a winner around their prized Cuban import.
