The Pittsburgh Penguins are holding out Sidney Crosby for at least the next two games as he deals with an illness that could be the latest mumps breakout across the NHL.

Reigning Hart Trophy winner and the NHL’s second-leading scorer, Sidney Crosby, will be held out of the next two games as the Pittsburgh Penguins are keeping their star center out as a precautionary measure.

Crosby has been feeling ill and the team’s medical specialists recommended he sit out after receiving his medical tests. At this time they do not believe he has the mumps, which has been a bit of an epidemic across the league as a number of players have been diagnosed with the mumps in recent weeks.

"“There is no indication at this time that this is the mumps, but we are going to hold him out as a precaution,” Rutherford said, via the team’s website. “We’ll have additional test results in a few days.”"

The team originally insisted he would play in tonight’s game against the Calgary Flames but after going through practice with half his face completely swollen the team changed its course and will play it safe with their star player.

Crosby has 35 points in 26 games for the Penguins who have a one-point lead over the New York Islanders for first place in the Metropolitan division.

If he only misses two games he will miss tonight’s game against Calgary and Saturday’s game against the Columbus Blue Jackets. If it lingers he would be out for Monday’s Eastern Conference showdown against the Tampa Bay Lightning, which would be the best game of the season so far for each team.
