The Dallas Cowboys needed a win on Sunday afternoon to clinch the NFC East and lock up a playoff spot, and that’s exactly what Tony Romo delivered.

For all the crap that Tony Romo has taken over the years for not being able to finish off a season or lead the Cowboys anywhere special, he made up for a lot of that on Sunday afternoon. He’s a quarterback who has lived and often times died by having to clinch a playoff spot in the final week of the season but that’s not the case this season.

More from Dallas Cowboys

Romo lit up the Indianapolis Colts for four touchdowns and 218 yards through the air in the 42-7 blowout win over the Colts. The win not only validated Romo as an elite quarterback, but it locked up the NFC East for the Dallas Cowboys and punched their playoff ticket.

With the win, the Cowboys become just the second NFC team to win their division this season, with the Arizona Cardinals being the other NFC victors at the moment. The Green Bay Packers and Detroit Lions have also clinched playoff berths this season meaning the final two spots in the postseason are down to the Falcons, Panthers and Seahawks.

No one really cares about that right now in Dallas, as the Cowboys are in and they’ve clinched a crucial postseason berth that has been a long time coming. Jason Garrett and Tony Romo have validated themselves this season, and while a playoff berth is hardly a Super Bowl win, it’s the first step the team has failed to take in the recent past.

As it stands now, the Cowboys will play the Seattle Seahawks if they clinch a playoff spot tonight, and that’s a rematch everyone wants to see in the Wild Card round.
