The Boston Celtics are listening to the Cleveland Cavaliers about adding a third team for a trade in the wake of the Cavs losing Anderson Varejao’s season-ending Achilles injury.

Anderson Varejao’s season-ending Achilles injury has led the Cleveland Cavaliers to contact the Boston Celtics about finding a third team for trade that would net the Cavs a big man.

The Celtics received a $12.909 million trade exception in their deal with the Dallas Mavericks for point guard Rajon Rondo, something that has gained Cleveland’s attention. Both Brian Windhorst and Marc Stein of ESPN have reported that the Cavaliers are looking to dial up the conversation:

From Brian Windhorst and Marc Stein of ESPN:

"Sources say the Cavs, in recent days, have been in contact with the Boston Celtics about working as a facilitator in three-team trade scenarios. The Celtics, blessed with frontcourt depth in the wake of their recent acquisition of Brandan Wright in the Rajon Rondo deal, have been aggressive recently in their attempts to acquire future draft picks."

Cleveland could look at center Brandan Wright, who was acquired by Boston as part of the Rondo deal, yet the potential could be greater for the Cavaliers if a third team is involved. The market for quality big men is thin, which is why Cleveland is in search of finding a compliment for Tristan Thompson.

The Celtics, who already have five future first round picks, would certainly like to add another if they can become the middleman in a deal that would net the Cavs a big man. Rondo’s departure officially started the Boston rebuilding project, which has general manager Danny Ainge set to stockpile young talent.
