Cowboys defensive end Jeremy Mincey says the team has a similar feel to Broncos last year.

The Cowboys will be hoping that it’s more than a feeling.

Dallas Cowboys defensive end Jeremy Mincey was part of that Denver Broncos team that went to the Super Bowl last year, although it ultimately didn’t end the way he wanted it to, as Denver lost the game at the hands of the Seattle Seahawks. The feeling of losing has stuck with Mincey since, and he reminds himself of how close he was to football glory every day.

One of the parting gifts for being in the Super Bowl was a pair of limited-edition silver Nike Free Trainer 5.0 sneakers. He keeps those shoes in his locker to remind him every day of what he is playing for.

“You see the shoes, right? I wear those at least once a week just to remind me of what I’m in this game for, definitely for a Super Bowl, that’s what we all play it for,” Mincey said.

Mincey came over to the Cowboys this year after signing with the team as a free agent during the off-season. He was brought in to bring veteran leadership to a relatively young Cowboys team, and to replace some of the production left by Demarcus Ware, who coincidentally signed with the Denver Broncos this same past off-season. Mincey has more playoff starts (five) than the rest of the Cowboys’ defensive line combined (four).

Mincey has been trying to prepare his team for what they can expect in the playoffs. He is emphasizing focus, precision, and work ethic; three traits that made the Broncos so successful in their Super Bowl run last season. Mincey has seen the Cowboys display similar traits as they prepare for their Wild Card playoff game against the Detroit Lions on Sunday.

“The work ethic we have here is amazing. It’s as good as I’ve seen since I’ve been in the league,” Mincey said. “And guys are sprinting to the ball, taking every day seriously and not taking one moment for granted, and when you have that in a group of men and coaches, you have something special.”

It is yet to be seen if the work ethic will pay off. The Cowboys have been one of the biggest surprises this season, and a lot of the credit goes to their offensive line. They have given DeMarco Murray all the room in the world to run wild, and Tony Romo all day to find his receivers. The Dallas offensive line will be key again in this game, as they will go against Ndamukong Suh and the ferocious Detroit Lions defensive line. DeMarco Murray is still recovering from having hand surgery two weeks ago as well, so his effectiveness will be something to keep an eye on as well in this game.
