Fantasy Football: Will Peyton Manning Retire?

facebooktwitterreddit

The question as to what will Peyton Manning do next year will hopefully not reach the status that of a certain QB from a few years ago who goes by the name of Brett Favre. However, it is a question with some relevance to it. If he does retire, just what kind of ripple will it have across the world of fantasy football? Well, I for one can tell you that I hope that Peyton plays the 2015 season and plays it well. But just for kicks, we need to talk for a minute about what is going to happen if, by chance, Peyton wins a second Super Bowl ring and decides it is time to move on to a role similar to that of his current boss, John Elway. If you came here expecting that I have the answer, then I will apologize and simply say that I hope we don’t find Peyton running your local convenience store.

For starters, football is going to be a lot less fun to watch without Peyton, as we got a small taste of that just a few seasons back when Peyton sat out after multiple neck surgeries. Peyton is such a student of the game and he has that “it” factor that makes him such a joy to watch as he leads drive after drive down the field. So if Peyton does retire, then the Broncos likely take a huge fall down the rankings. They may not fall as far as the Colts did before they were able to draft Andrew Luck, but it is impossible to see the effect that Peyton has on his team until he is gone.

For you dynasty and keeper league fantasy team owners that have Peyton, you are going to be left scrambling just as bad as the Broncos are. There is no way to replace a Peyton Manning, that is of course unless you are as lucky as the Colts were and can draft a once in a lifetime kind of player like Andrew Luck.

For the gambler in fantasy leagues, I like to look at this as an opportunity to jump on a commodity that you might be able to get a severely discounted rate. In a dynasty league, you might be able to land Peyton for pennies on the dollar and for keeper leagues you can probably still get him at a nice discount. This is a particularly good idea if you have a nice backup QB option available. If you are going to take a chance on Peyton in either of these league formats,  then you would be well advised to also find some way to acquire a good backup option.

No one knows for sure if Manning will be back except for maybe Manning himself.
