Jim Harbaugh wasted little time in taking the head coaching gig at the University of Michigan, and now he reportedly already has an offensive coordinator lined up in USC offensive line coach Tim Drevno.

Less than two days removed from his final day as the head coach of the San Francisco 49ers, Jim Harbaugh took one of the biggest jobs in college football.

Now the head coach of his alma mater Michigan Wolverines, Harbaugh has reportedly already moved to add a new offensive coordinator to his staff. According to multiple reports, Harbaugh has hired a familiar face to be his offensive coordinator. Considering the expertise that Harbaugh has become known for over the years, the man he hires to run the offense with him is no small hire.

It makes sense, then, that Harbaugh would look to a former colleague to fill that role on his new staff. Sure enough, reports indicate that he will hire Tim Drevno, currently the offensive line coach for the USC Trojans and  a guy who coached with him previously at San Diego University.

While at San Diego, Drevno served in the same role under Harbaugh.

The contracts for college coaches, and football coaches in general, are truly fascinating. Granted, it’s not exactly earth-shattering when an offensive line coach moves on to a different gig. Still, the fact that these coaches can just quit one job and move to another is interesting, especially given the collective inclination among the group to join up with their buddies.

While Harbaugh went to Michigan to regain a certain comfort level as compared to the tumultuous year he just experienced in San Francisco, there will still be tremendous pressure on him to win and to win right away. That he would be aggressive in his pursuit of a good coaching staff is not surprising in that context.

Head coaches are the stars in college football, but they still need quality assistants to make their programs tick. Jim Harbaugh should know that as well as anybody, and that presumably factored into his thinking in his pursuit of Trevno as his new offensive coordinator.
