Arizona Cardinals head coach Bruce Arians has announced that Ryan Lindley will be starting for the team this weekend in the NFC Wild Card.

The Arizona Cardinals will be without two of their four starting quarterbacks to have played for them this season, as Carson Palmer is being joined by Drew Stanton as quarterbacks who will not be playing this weekend against the Carolina Panthers.

Palmer has been out for weeks with a torn ACL and Stanton suffered an infection after surgery that will sideline him for the NFC Wild Card game this weekend in North Carolina. As a result, Ryan Lindley will get the nod as starter, which means football fans had better prepare themselves for a one-and-done trip to the postseason for the Cardinals.

According to Cardinals beat writer Darren Urban, the most unsurprising quarterback move of the week has been made by the Arizona Cardinals.

Ryan Lindley getting the start for the Cardinals may mean a quick exit from the postseason despite the promising season the team had. There’s still a chance that the Cardinals can get a win in Carolina this weekend but they’d then go on to face the Green Bay Packers at Lambeau Field, which is asking way too much of Lindley.

It’s a real bummer that the Cardinals season came down to this, but it’s worth celebrating that they got this far. Most teams would and did crumble when their starting quarterback went down, but somehow the Cardinals went through three quarterbacks and still managed to stay afloat. Injuries to Carson Palmer, Drew Stanton and Logan Thomas forced Ryan Lindley to be the fourth starting quarterback this season for the Cardinals, yet here they sit in the NFC Wild Card round.

It’s ironic that they’re going up against a Panthers team that was healthy most of the season, had their starting quarterback for all but two games and still managed to only win less than half their games. If the cardinals get bounced by the Panthers, it will be a true travesty of the NFL, but it still doesn’t ruin what a football story this was from start to finish.
