The New York Yankees continue to do very little to get fans excited about the 2015 season the way they once used to in the offseason.
The 2014 season for the New York Yankees turned out to once again be a disappointment as for the second straight season they missed out on the playoffs. It is blasphemy in the eyes of every spoiled Yankee fan who only know 1996 and on.
The late George Steinbrenner must be rolling in his grave right now, and if it hadn’t been for Derek Jeter and retirement festivities, Yankee Stadium would’ve been a ghost-town down the stretch.
Sadly for fans, the team hasn’t done much else to raise hopes during the offseason.
Today it was announced that New York acquired pitchers Matt Carpenter and Chasen Shreve from the Atlanta Braves for once prominent pitching prospect Manny Banuelos, formally of the once famed “Killer B’s.”

Oh yippie. Quick, someone get the Yankees a ticket to the playoffs next season.
Carpenter is a 29-year-old righty who enjoyed his best year in the bigs in 2013. He fanned 74 batters to the tune of a 1.78 ERA in 65.2 innings for Atlanta. He’s also pitched for Houston and Toronto during a mostly an average career out of the bullpen.
Banuelos’ fall from Yankee grace has been well documented. Once a firm member of the “Killer B’s” with now-star Dellin Betances, he’s been plagued with inconsistencies and injuries.
While nobody can say anything bad about this specific deal, the fact that the Yankees have disappointed fans this offseason is very real.
Usually nothing moves this franchise quite as much as missing the playoffs and the Boston Red Sox. Every time Boston does something, the Yanks want to top it in glorious fashion. What happened after the 2008 season when New York missed the playoffs for the first time since 93′ and Boston was only one year removed from the second championship? They went out on an all-time spending spree en route to the 2009 World Series Championship.
Considering what the Sox have done so far in taking on Pablo Sandoval, Hanley Ramirez and Rick Porcello, the fact that the Yanks can say Chase Headley and Andrew Miller have been their biggest announcements of the offseason is truly shocking.
What is their strategy here?
Most intelligent pinstripe fans realize this team needs to completely overhaul the organization. The days of clogging up each position with veteran players, not allowing youngsters the chance to develop have passed them by.
The new hot-word in baseball is “develop,” and acquiring free agents who are already at that magic 30-year-old mark slowly ruins the entire landscape of your personnel.
However, because it’s obvious the Yanks won’t go that route, it begs the question: what in the world are they doing?
There hasn’t been one move by general manager Brian Cashman that can be classified as exciting. For the second straight offseason, they’ve allowed a home-grown stud to walk, while signing other free-agent players to overpaid contracts. Robinson Cano and David Robertson are gone while overpaid players like Beltran, Ellsbury and Headley continue to be acquired.
It seems their current organizational philosophy can be classified as “halfway.” They’re not rebuilding, yet they’re also not spending money.
It leaves fans scratching their heads and wondering what’s next…if anything at all.
