Rex Ryan will be interviewing for the San Francisco 49ers’ head coaching job on Sunday.
The San Francisco 49ers have begun their search for a new head coach after parting ways with Jim Harbaugh. The team has reportedly wasted no time in identifying some candidates for the job, with some well-known names being considered.

One of those potential candidates is former New York Jets’ head coach Rex Ryan, who will interview with the 49ers on Sunday according to a report from Pro Football Talk.
Hiring Ryan would be a very solid move for the 49ers, although it wouldn’t bring the offensive-minded coach that they were rumored to be looking for a couple of weeks ago.
Ryan has also drawn interest from the Atlanta Falcons after they fired Mike Smith.
Ryan caught a lot of heat from the New York media after struggling the past few seasons, but they forget about his success in his first two season as the Jets’ head coach. Ryan took New York to two straight AFC Championship games, but lost in both. Despite the lack of success over the past few seasons, the Jets have still had a very solid defense thanks to Ryan’s focus on that side of the football.
If the 49ers did hire Ryan, he would likely look to bring in an offensive guru to help him get the offense on track.
During his six seasons with the Jets, Ryan finished with a 46-50 record. The 49ers would offer him a much better situation immediately, and they would likely be an even better fit that the Falcons can offer.
Obviously it is going to be a very interesting offseason to watch the coaching carousel with all of the job openings. Ryan is going to be in high demand, but the 49ers’ defensive talent might be just enough to lure him out west.
It wouldn’t be surprising to see more teams show interest in Ryan than just the 49ers and Falcons before the interviewing process is completed.
