No. 2-seeded Oregon went up by double digits late in the first half of the Rose Bowl on a touchdown run by Thomas Tyner to cap a long drive.
Oregon drove 75 yards in 10 plays in exactly three minutes, taking an 18-6 lead in the Rose Bowl when Thomas Tyner banged into the end zone from 1-yard out.
Oregon (12-1) is attempting to advance past defending national champion Florida State (13-0) and the Seminoles’ 29-game winning streak.
Tyner had helped get Oregon in position to score with a 23-yard run into the red zone.
It was the Ducks’ second rushing touchdown of the game. Royce Freeman had scored the game’s first touchdown in the first quarter.
Tyner, a sophomore from Aloha, Ore., was part of Oregon’s backfield rotation this season, gaining 387 yards and scoring three touchdowns on 88 carries coming into the bowl game.
His workload diminished this season with the emergence of Freeman. As a freshman in 2013, Tyner had rushed for 711 yards and nine scores.
The Ducks and Seminoles are playing in the semifinals of the inaugural College Football Playoff, with the winner advancing to the championship game Jan. 12 in Arlington, Texas.
Oregon played for one national title under the old Bowl Championship Series format, losing to Auburn after the 2010 season.
Florida State went 2-2 in the BCS title game, playing in the first three before not returning until last season.
The Seminoles lost to Tennessee after the 1998 season, beat Virginia Tech following the 1999 season, fell to Oklahoma after the 2000 season and topped Auburn to close out last season.
