Thon Maker shows why he’s so highly recruited (Video)
By Phil Watson
Thon Maker may jump from being the best junior in high school basketball to one of the best seniors. He showed why with a spin move and dunk earlier this week.
What’s 7 feet tall, handles like a guard, has a filthy spin move and can dunk in such a way as to make a normal high-school basketball player look like a chump?
The answer would be Thon Maker, a junior at the Athlete Institute in Canada who played at Orangeville Prep.
This move from earlier this week was just ridiculous:
Maker had been considered the top recruit in the class of 2016, a 7-foot, 210-pounder according to ESPN.com, who can do everything.
But the Louisville Courier-Journal reported last month that Maker, depending on where he is academically later this month or early in February, might jump to this year’s senior class.
Maker has all of the usual suspects on his trail, with offers from national powers such as Arizona, Duke, Florida, Kansas, Kentucky, Louisville and Texas.
Maker was born in Sudan and immigrated to Australia after they were accepted as refugees from the war-torn nation via Uganda.
He came to the U.S. in 2011 and played at the Carlisle School in Martinsville, Va., for two seasons before enrolling along with his brother, Matur, at the Athlete Institute in Ontario.
Matur is considered a top recruit in the class of 2017.
ESPN.com’s scouting report says “Maker, who has that super long and lean Kevin Garnett body type, has off-the-chart upside and with continued development and hard work is an immediate impact player on the college level and a potential NBA lottery pick.”
The kid in the video above who got demolished would probably agree with that assessment.
