Fantasy Basketball: Should I add John Henson?

One of the popular waiver adds in fantasy basketball right now is John Henson. I have got several “should I add John Henson” questions recently, so I thought I would address the question in a quick post. John Henson became a vastly popular guy last year as he was a mid season waiver add that turned out to be a very good add for your teams through the month of January. Henson is in his third season with the Bucks, and is just coming back from an injury this year. He played the first four games of the year before going down with an injury.

Henson first gained a little bit of popularity in his rookie season when he averaged roughly 9 points and 8 boards over 22 minutes a game. Henson also threw down almost 2 blocks a game in that span. Then his sophomore season he followed it up with a bit of a roller coaster season as he never seemed to gain consistent minutes, except for the month of December where he received 33 minutes a game and translated that into 15.2 points, 10.8 rebounds and 2.3 blocked shots a game. Henson has definitely shown flashes of being a pretty high upside player.

The problem Henson has had is that he has now played under four coaches in three seasons. What we have learned about Jason Kidd is that while he was not very successful in Brooklyn, he does have the Bucks playing decent. Unfortunately for us, he does not care about our fantasy team as evident by his crazy rotations. The other problem Henson has had over his career was getting consistent minutes, and when you couple those problems together it seems to amplify the problem for me. There is no secret that it is near impossible for any player to produce if he is not given regular minutes.

Henson has more than demonstrated that he has the upside necessary to take a flier on him, and maybe even while cutting someone who is seeing regular minutes. You must realize that this will come with a cost, and that cost is the minute carousel that Jason Kidd seems to have the Bucks on these days. I would also definitely add him in a cats league, or possibly even a roto league. Over his career he has always been a fairly well rounded player, and with a 52% FG rate this season he is sporting a 72.1% FT rate so he shouldn’t hurt you there too bad. He has vastly improved his career free throw percentage, which could earn him the extra minutes he has needed to fully break out.

Based on all the information we have, he is a guy that I would definitely pick up and maybe even float a low ball type of offer and see what I can get him for before he does break out and price himself out of being a worthy trade candidate.
