The Basics

Jameis Winston is 6-foot-4, 235 pounds and turned 21 on January 6. Physically he is about the same size as Andrew Luck, but does carry a lot of bad weight on his frame, suggesting a lack of commitment in the weight room. Obviously that could change as he prepares himself to be picked apart by scouts at the 2015 NFL scouting combine.

He won the Heisman Trophy in 2013 while leading Florida State to an undefeated season and a BCS National Championship. In 2014 he regressed statistically, but still led the Seminoles to an undefeated regular season record before they were hammered by Oregon 59-20 in the Rose Bowl.

As a redshirt freshman in 2013, Winston completed 66.9 percent of his passes for 4,057 yards, with 40 touchdowns and 10 interceptions. In 2014 he completed 65.3 percent of his passes for 3,907 yards, with 25 touchdowns and 18 interceptions. The 2014 season was not kind to Winston on the stat sheet or on film.

While Winston’s pure natural talent as a quarterback is evident without having to watch most of his tape, he relies on that talent far too much. He’s gotten by on his natural ability for so long that it almost feels like he hasn’t put in the work to get better. That showed this season as he regressed on the field. Still, his feel for the position is more advanced than any quarterback in this year’s draft class.
