Jeff Ireland has not yet officially been hired by the New Orleans Saints.

Apparently, someone jumped the gun on reporting that Jeff Ireland had been hired by the New Orleans Saints.

Earlier this morning, reports were coming out that the New Orleans Saints had hired former Miami Dolphins general manager Jeff Ireland to do college scouting for the team. Those reports have seemed to be a bit premature.

More from New Orleans Saints

According to Alex Marvez of Fox Sports, Ireland says he has not been hired by the New Orleans Saints. He met with the team and says he would like to sign on with them, but, as of right now, nothing is official just yet.

It seems more than likely though that Ireland will be working for the Saints sooner rather than later. The Saints lost some key personnel recently, as director of player personnel Ryan Pace left the organization to become the general manager of the Chicago Bears. Pace also took Saints’ area scout Josh Lucas with him to Chicago to become the Bears’ director of player personnel.

So, the Saints could use some reinforcements in the front office, and bringing in a familiar face like Jeff Ireland seems to be a good choice.

Ireland spent six years as the Miami Dolphins general manager before being fired in 2013. He spent parts of this past season being a consultant for the Seattle Seahawks, but no full-time position came of it. Ireland never worked for the Saints, but he worked with head coach Sean Peyton when both of them were with the Dallas Cowboys in the early 2000’s.

Ireland didn’t have too much success in Miami, and many fans expressed their frustration with the job Ireland was doing with the Dolphins. Bringing him into a less visible role, and a role that he would be comfortable in, will most likely be beneficial for both the Saints and Ireland. Ireland was a scout for the NFL scouting combine and the Kansas City Chiefs, then was a national scout with the Dallas Cowboys before being promoted to VP of college and pro scouting with the Cowboys.

He was hired by the Dolphins as general manager in 2008, which honestly was probably not a smart move on the Dolphins part. Ireland had only spent two years as VP of college and pro scouting before being hired as general manager, meaning he only had two years of management experience in the NFL prior to being hired. He was hired for a job he most likely wasn’t even qualified to do.

If he does take the job with the Saints, it will be a role he will absolutely be comfortable in and good be a very valuable asset for the Saints.
