Famous soccer manager Bill Shankly’s infamous quote, “Some people believe football is a matter of life and death, I can assure you it’s much more important than that” has been used across the world for decades. It’s mostly used to describe someones passion for the game, but when something like this happens it really puts the importance of sport in to perspective.
Nothing is more important than life and death, family and friends.
Joe McCarthy III, who was an attorney, passed away after collapsing while playing raquet ball at a gym. The Journal Sentinal reported that the former Deputy Attorney General was 47 years old, he died shortly after being rushed to UPMC Passavant hospital in McCandless, PA. His older brother, Mike. who coaches the Green Bay Packers, flew to Pittsburgh after receiving the news early in the day.
Mike has 3 remaining siblings after the death of his little brother.
The news comes just three days after a heartbreaking defeat for the Packers in the NFC championship game on Sunday. The Packers threw away a massive lead and failed to receive an onside kick resulting in the Seahawk’s running down field to tie the game. The game would eventually go in to over time where the Seahawk’s punished the Packers for their petulance earlier in the game.
Thousands of fans were heartbroken and some questioned the coaching decisions of McCarthy but I’m sure all the Packer’s fans are going to pal together to show their support for their coach in his time of need.

Thoughts to Mike McCarthy's family in this difficult time.
Mike McCarthy was scheduled to hold an end of season press conference today, but after hearing the news he cancelled the media event, this was announced by the Packers and the reason given was ‘A personal matter relating to a staff member’.
Obviously, passing of Mike McCarthy's brother explains why season-ending interviews were postponed today. Sure puts football in perspective.
