The Detroit point guard’s season could be over after an Achilles injury

To say the Detroit Pistons have been surging since releasing Josh Smith, would be an understatement. Detroit has won 12 of 16 since releasing the forward with one of the big keys to their recent success being the improved play of Brandon Jennings.

It now appears that Jennings season could be over and that would be a big blow to the Pistons who are looking to return to the playoffs.

In the third quarter of Saturday night’s game against the Milwaukee Bucks, Jennings fell to the floor in immediate agony and it was apparent something wasn’t right with the Detroit guard. Jennings began clutching his left leg immediately and had to be helped off the court.

The word coming out of Detroit is that the team fears Jennings season might be over because of a torn Achilles.

It’s a major loss for Detroit who was one of the league’s hottest teams and were working their way up the ladder in the Eastern Conference. Head coach Stan Van Gundy knows how big the impact of losing Jennings is to the Pistons.

“It doesn’t look good,” coach Stan Van Gundy said after the game, “It is a major, major loss.”

Jennings known early in his career for scoring rather than passing from the point guard position, had a career high 21 assists against the Orlando Magic on Wednesday and you could see his game starting to come full circle. His numbers had also drastically improved post-Josh Smith.

D.J. Augustin was signed by Detroit in the offseason to be the backup point guard. His role will increase now with Jennings out. Augustin is no stranger to the point guard role and was an effective backup for the Indiana Pacers and Chicago Bulls for the last few years during their respective playoff runs.

The good news for Detroit fans is that Jennings, 25, is still young and the team has exciting young players on the roster such as Andre Drummond and Greg Monroe, if the latter returns as a free agent next year.

The Pistons currently just sit 1 1/2 games out of the eighth seed in the Eastern Conference at 17-27 and in the Eastern Conference, anyone has a shot at making it in.

Van Gundy is a seasoned coach who has a wealth of experience and will have his team prepared for their next move going forward. It just appears that they won’t have Brandon Jennings for the foreseeable future.
