The footballs for Super Bowl XLIX will receive extra security to prevent any tampering.

The NFL is taking precautions to make sure no one tampers with the balls for Super Bowl XLIX.

After the New England Patriots were suspected of deflating footballs during their AFC Championship game against the Indianapolis Colts, the NFL wants to make sure that nothing shady happens during the Super Bowl.

The Patriots were subject to an investigation by the NFL about the deflated balls. So far, the investigation found that the balls were definitely under-inflated. Still, they have no found any evidence that it was the Patriots doing so on purpose.

Just to be safe though, the NFL will instill some added security for the footballs at the Super Bowl. Not exactly sure what that will entail, though. Maybe the NFL is going to put them in a high security vault, or perhaps put some trip-wires around the balls. They could also put the balls in a room and surround them with motion-sensor lasers.

What would be really cool is if they put sensors on the footballs that measures the amount of air pressure in the football. If it goes below a certain level, it triggers the lights to go off, or just something else that will make the game stop.

I mean, in reality, how far are we from that technology?

Whatever the security detail is that will be on the footballs, they better take it very seriously and be ready. I’m sure Bill Belichick has his own Ocean’s 11 standing by waiting to break in and get to the balls. Julian Edelman will be the crafty, Asian guy who can fit in tight places and Gronk, well, he can just break through walls or something.

There will also be more balls on hand than in any other NFL game. Instead of having just 12 balls like always, each team will have 54 footballs. This isn’t because of deflate-gate, the Super Bowl always carries more footballs because they are auctioned off after the game, with some of the proceeds going to charities.

Not sure if the NFL will change protocol with the footballs after this whole deflate-gate incident. Maybe the officials at the games should be more thorough with checking the PSI of the footballs during the games, or maybe they should keep the teams from holding on to the footballs as long as they do before the game.

Hopefully, we never hear of anything like this happening again. However, as long as Bill Belichick is in the league, we probably will.

H/T to Deadspin for the information.
