Seattle Seahawks cornerback Richard Sherman potentially faces a big decision if his girlfriend goes into labor on Sunday and Eric Decker couldn’t resist some trolling.

Just call this Super Bowl the Super Distraction Bowl. Can anyone remember a Super Bowl with this much outside stuff going on? One more addition to the free for all is the probably remote possibility that Seahawks cornerback Richard Sherman would miss the game if his girlfriend goes into labor on Sunday. Sherman says he hopes it will be a nonissue, and probably the vast majority of Seahawks fans are with him on that.

Seahawks head coach Pete Carroll said family comes first and they would understand if he decided to be with his girlfriend.

Jets wide receiver, and former Broncos wide receiver, Eric Decker added his opinion on the matter, albeit a rather mean-spirited one.

"“Well, it’s different when it’s a girlfriend and a wife,” Decker said on WFAN radio. “So I think if it was my wife giving birth, you know, ultimately I believe my purpose is to be a father and a husband. It’s easier said now because I’m not preparing for the game and I’m not in that situation. But with a clear mind, I guess, thinking about that situation he’s in — I mean, you never want to be in it. You’ve gotta time your conception a little better, I would say. But I would be there for my wife and my newborn child.”"

That’s one hot take, Decker. Perhaps he’s still a bit bitter that his team was denied the victory last year. You know, the one where he was limited to one reception for six yards thanks to the Seahawks’ tight coverage.

As for the probability on the matter, Sherman has said that recent doctor visits seem to indicate that his son should not be born during the big game, but of course that sort of thing can always change. Sherman remained highly noncommittal as to whether he would actually miss the game if what he hopes doesn’t happen, happens.

If it does and he did decide to be with his girlfriend, the Seahawks would be in a big bind. Sherman typically shuts down his side of the field and the Seahawks might find themselves in a five defensive back nickle alignment to combat the Patriots three and four wide receiver sets. That puts Jeremy Lane in the nickle position and the only back up would likely be Tharold Simon, and that’s a big dropoff from Sherman.
