Notre Dame was stunned on Saturday by Pitt, just a few days after knocking off Duke

Optimism was high this week as it pertains to the Notre Dame Fighting Irish basketball program, seeing as they were able to knock off a top five team in the Duke Blue Devils. It seemed as if the No. 8 team in the nation was beginning to put together a nice string of momentum that they can take into the month of February, and potentially into March, where it matters the most.

Well, that all came to a screeching halt on Saturday afternoon when they took a road trip to face the unranked Pittsburgh Panthers and came away with a 76-72 loss.

In the upset win, Pitt got a phenomenal effort from forward Jamel Artis, who finished the game with 20 points and eight rebounds, with three assists and two steals. Contributing also in a big way was guard James Robinson, who finished the outing with double-double, dropping in 15 points with 10 assists.

With the loss, Notre Dame now falls to 20-3 overall on the season and 8-2 in ACC play. They’ll look to get things back on track Wednesday night when they take on Boston College.

As for Pitt, they improve to 14-8 overall on the year and 4-5 in the ACC. Coming down the stretch this was a much needed win for the Panthers and they went out and got the job done. They’ll look to keep up the pace this Monday night when they take on Bryant in out-of-conference play.
