Report: Marvin Harrison and Tony Dungy miss the HOF cut
By Robby Sabo
On the eve the Super Bowl we learn more of who and who won’t be heading to Canton this summer.
Not only is the Super Bowl a game that caps off the NFL season, but it now represents a significant time frame.
Commissioner Roger Goodell and the rest of his henchmen have done a wonderful job revising the structure of the Pro Bowl and awards ceremony around this time as well. Moving the Pro Bowl up prior to the Super Bowl, and creating an actual awards ceremony titled NFL Honors, are just two examples of how late January has changed for this league.
The league is so big now that everything can be turned into an event or ceremony, even the Pro Bowl as we’ve seen in the fantasy draft.
Another piece of information that starts leaking out on the final weekend of the NFL season is the final cuts for induction to the Pro Football Hall of Fame. The group of inductees are actually announced at NFL Honors.
According to Bob Kravitz, his sources have told him that former Indianapolis Colts wide receiver Marvin Harrison and former Colts and Tampa Bay Buccaneers head coach Tony Dungy have both missed the final cut, while longtime Colts general manager Bill Polian will receive that magical call.
For Dungy, it shouldn’t be a surprise that he doesn’t get in right away. While he is a Super Bowl winner and has a very positive career record of 85-27 (.759), his longevity pales in comparison to other Hall of Fame coaches (only seven seasons).
Many thought he’d get in purely because of how closely tied in he is to the league now. He seems like the “go to” guy for so many teams in so many situations.
Harrison is the big snub and story here.
This will mark the second straight year that the talented former wide-out has been snubbed.
For his career, Peyton Manning’s favorite target of all-time compiled 1,102 receptions, 14,580 receiving yards, and 128 touchdowns. He currently ranks seventh on the all-time list in yards, third in receptions, and fifth in receiving touchdowns.
Not only that, but only eight players have scored more touchdowns than him in the history of this fine league.
How in the world is this guy still sitting outside of Canton?
