Evan Gattis 2015 Projections

There were a lot of moves that took place during the Winter Meetings that affected baseball, both real and fantasy. With players changing teams, and leagues, some players’ stock rose while others sank. Evan Gattis was traded from the Atlanta Braves to the Houston Astros. Changing leagues could be the boost he needed to become a fantasy superstar.

In his two seasons with the Braves, Gattis was an average fantasy player. He provided owners with some power, but hindered batting average greatly. He hit a total of 43 home runs and 117 RBI with a .253 batting average over the last two seasons. While there is definitely some value in a power-hitting catcher, you could likely do without a .245 average.

Gattis will now be in the middle of a lineup with some undervalued talent. Youngsters George Springer, Jose Altuve, Jon Singleton and veteran Chris Carter all bring something special to the plate. Adding another power hitter to the mix is a good thing.

The Astros’ left-field fence is 20 feet closer than Atltanta’s, which helps the lefty-pulling hitter Gattis is. He will have no problem hitting 20 home runs at home this season.

Another added benefit is that the Astros are in the American League, owners of the designated hitter. If the Astros don’t feel like sending his poor fielding skills into the outfield, he can still get his at bats at the DH. Gattis had 401 at bats last season. In the American League, he could see upwards of 500, making fantasy owners very happy.

Despite the one-stat production Gattis brings, he is still ranked as the fourth-best catcher. With the position as shallow as it is, owners will be reaching for him early. He will be playing on a better hitting team, surprisingly, helping his stats across the board.

Projection: 27 HR, 78 RBI, .248 average. Drafted in Round 8.
