James Dolan discusses hateful e-mail, doesn’t exactly apologize
Knicks owner James Nolan says his nasty email was ‘tit for tat’
Knicks owner James Dolan has been in a lot of hot water this week over an email he sent to a disgruntled fan containing many personal attacks. Well, truth be told, Dolan has spent more time in hot water than out during his time as Knicks owner, so maybe that’s just where he’s most comfortable.
Dolan gave a not-quite-apology today, while he was speaking at a charity event, per ESPN.

“I got sent a bad, hateful email,” Dolan said. “I generally don’t respond to the bad ones. This time, it just caught me at the wrong moment and I responded. Sort of tit for tat. And I knew I shouldn’t have done that and I did it anyway because it made me angry. Because it was a personal, hateful attack.”
For reference, here is part of the initial email, which was sent to Dolan by 73-year-old fan Irving Bierman:
"At one stage I thought that you did a wonderful thing when you acquired EVERYTHING from your dad. However, since then it has been ALL DOWN HILL. Your working with Isaiah Thomas & everything else regarding the Knicks. Bringing on Phil Jackson was a positive beginning, but lowballing Steve Kerr was a DISGRACE to the knicks. The bottom line is that you merely continued to interfere with the franchise. As a knicks fan for in excess of 60 years, I am utterly embarrassed by your dealings with the Knicks. Sell them so their fans can at least look forward to growing them in a positive direction. Obviously, money IS NOT THE ONLY THING. You have done a lot of utterly STUPID business things with the franchise. Please NO MORE."
And here is Dolan’s response (original spelling and grammar intact):
"You are a sad person. Why would anybody write such a hateful letter. I am.just guessing but ill bet your life is a mess and you are a hateful mess. What have you done that anyone would consider positive or nice. I am betting nothing. In fact Ill bet you are negative force in everyone who comes in contact with you. You most likely have made your family miserable. Alcoholic maybe. I just celebrated by 21 year anniversary of sobriety. You should try it. Maybe it will help you become a person that folks would like to have around. In the mean while start rooting.for the Nets because the Knicks dont want you.RespectfullyJames Dolan"
Hmm, so if Bierman’s email was “hateful” I wonder what you would call this one, Mr. Dolan? Considering the amount of unfounded and downright cruel accusations contained in Dolan’s email (Really? Someone yells at you via email and you just assume alcoholic?), it’s somewhat mind-boggling that he made no apologies for sending it, especially to Bierman himself. Bierman probably should go root for the Nets, just so he doesn’t have to root for a team run by a man who sent him that. Although you can do better than the Nets if you’re jumping ship; that’s like leaving the Titanic to go to the Hindenburg.
