Free agent quarterback Josh McCown is having breakfast with Bears officials this morning.

NFL inside reporter Ian Rapaport reported this morning that free agent quarterback Josh McCown is having breakfast this morning with Chicago Bears officials. The Bears are one of eight teams who are supposedly interested in the free agent quarterback.

McCown met with the Buffalo Bills last week and the Cleveland Browns are another team that has shown interest in the 36-year-old quarterback.

More from Chicago Bears

According to the Chicago Tribune, McCown sat down with newly hired Bears head coach John Fox, general manager Ryan Pace and offensive coordinator Adam Gase. There is obviously a lot of familiarity for McCown, as he spent three seasons with the Bears backing up Jay Cutler before signing with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers last season as a free agent. Tampa Bay has since released McCown, making him a free agent. He is allowed to sign with another team before free agency officially opens on March 10.

Even though there are a lot of new faces on Chicago’s staff this year, there is still a lot of familiarity between the two parties. McCown played for John Fox when he was head coach of the Carolina Panthers. He also played for Gase when he was an assistant with the Detroit Lions.

Also, McCown has gotten to know Pace through mutual friends throughout the league.

"Love both (Fox and Gase), I have known them for long time. They’re both really good and it is a great opportunity for them and Chicago fans will love having them because they’re good football coaches. (Pace and I) have known each other for a while. It’s been neat to see his climb. I’m really happy for him."

Right now, the Bears only have Jay Cutler and David Fales, a sixth-round pick last year, as quarterbacks who are under contract. They would like to bring McCown back to the organization to have a stable backup behind Jay Cutler, or even someone to step in if Cutler’s game turns sour.

McCown realizes that he will most likely be in a backup role again with the Bears, but doesn’t necessarily view that as a negative thing.

"Obviously, players want to play but it’s in the right situation, that is what I mean. You want to have a chance to win and be successful. That is the main thing. So that is my focus."

John Fox has recently stated that he isn’t sold on Jay Cutler, so there may be an opportunity to possibly compete for the starting job in Chicago. I think Fox wants to go into the season with an open mind, view all his options and see who steps up. So, it may be an opportunity worth taking for McCown.
