Fantasy Basketball: Is Ramon Sessions Better Off After His Trade To Washington?

The Sacramento Kings were rumored to be interested in a wide range of PG’s this year from Rajon Rondo, to Ty Lawson, to Goran Dragic. None of those deals panned out, so they swapped backups with the Washington Wizards.

We know that a lot of you play in deeper leagues, so that is why we will let you know what to expect from these two. If you only play in standard leagues, neither of these players will be any more relevant to you than they were on Wednesday.

On the surface, this looks like a deal made out of boredom. When you dig a little deeper, it starts to make sense.

Andre Miller is a veteran presence, which is what Kings coach George Karl covets. Miller likely will see a few more minutes than he did in Washington, but I am not convinced that it will make him worth adding in anything but the deepest of leagues. He is still a fringe player in 16 team leagues.

The intriguing piece of this deal is Sessions. He performed well when Darren Collison missed a few games in January. So for the Wizards, having a younger, more dynamic player backing up franchise PG John Wall is a big step up. They know they are protected in the short term if Wall is forced to miss a few games here and there. Far more protected than with just Miller running the show.

Sessions is worth adding in 16 team or larger leagues, and those of you in 14 team leagues should see how many minutes he logs in Washington and what he does with them to see if he can help your team there as well. He has good upside, and can produce when given 20 minutes a game.

It was a bit puzzling that the Kings didn’t go for more than just another veteran backup. Collison is a good point guard, but for some reason, the Kings aren’t really happy with him running the team. Miller is no threat to take his job, so Collison’s value won’t change.

This was mainly a player swap to suit the styles of both teams. Sesssions is a better fit for the younger Wizards, and could see a slight increase in value. Miller is a veteran presence that Karl wants running the show. Whether it will mean increased fantasy value for him or not remains to be seen. Make sure you keep an eye on what he does with his minutes in the short term to see if you need to pick him up.
