Eagles are the favorites to land free agent CB Byron Maxwell
By Ryan Ratty
Byron Maxwell could very well be a member of the Philadelphia Eagles in 2015.
In 2014, there really wasn’t a worse cornerback duo in all of the NFL than Bradley Fletcher and Cary Williams. Knowing that was their biggest flaw heading into the offseason, it’s no surprise to see that the Philadelphia Eagles are going to look to the draft and free agency to address their secondary. However, they might do just that by bringing in the top cornerback on the market in Byron Maxwell.
Tony Pauline of DraftInsider.net was the first to report the news of the Eagles’ heavy interest with the Seattle Seahawks‘ No. 2 cornerback.

Although Maxwell is entering the prime of his career and he will not only be looking for the big payday, but for the ability to become a true No. 1 cornerback as well, he’s going to cost a lot of money. In fact, the Eagles will not only have to fend off other cornerback-needy teams, but they will likely have to overpay him as well. Pauline also described how much money Maxwell could receive annually given how hot the free agent cornerback market will be this offseason.
At 6-foot-1, 210 pounds, Maxwell has the combination of size and speed that teams absolutely love. The Seahawks have fielded the best defense in the league over the past few seasons and although Richard Sherman, Kam Chancellor, and Earl Thomas have gotten all the attention, Maxwell deserves a ton of recognition as well.
Considering that the Eagles have many questions surrounding their roster, the reality is that Chip Kelly now has a bigger role in this team’s decision-making and he will want to be aggressive in their free agency search. Luckily enough for the Eagles, it was reported that the Eagles will have $15 million in space this season and that’s before the restructures. Considering the dead money, the Eagles could very well have over $34 million to spend this offseason. The Eagles are looking to win back the NFC East. By bringing in a top cornerback like Maxwell, they will finally have a cornerback who is deserving of being a No. 1 cornerback.
