He was a throwback basketball player playing in the last known “rough-house” era of the NBA – for the last known “rough-house” team in the New York Knicks.
He was also known for those fresh cuts he used to sport on a game-by-game basis.
Not only did New Yorkers highly anticipate their Knicks running out of the tunnel to face a Michael Jordan lead Chicago Bulls team on many occasions, but they also couldn’t wait until the newest words/design on the side of Mason’s head was revealed.
It seemed only a guy like Mason could pull this off, and the man behind those haircuts recently spoke to the New York Daily News about his client and friend’s sudden death at the age of 48.
Freddy Avila was the man behind so many Mason haircut masterpieces. Not only was Mason his client in his Jamaica, Queens barber shop, but he became one of his closest and dearest friends.
An emotional Avila spoke to the cameras about how he went to visit Mason the night before his death.
