Justin Smith and the San Francisco 49ers met on Wednesday.

At 35 years old, Justin Smith really has accomplished a lot in his career. As one of the more underrated defensive tackles in the game, Smith has had an excellent career and although he has never won that Super Bowl ring, he seems pretty content on hanging his cleats up and calling his career. Despite that notion, Smith met with new head coach Jim Tomsula on Wednesday.

According to Pro Football Talk’s Rotoworld, Smith and Tomsula met Wednesday morning at the San Francisco 49ers’ headquarters to talk about 2015 and whether Smith would return or not. The good news for 49ers fans is that there seems to be some optimism that Smith will return in 2015. The Sacramento Bee‘s Matt Burrows believes that there is cautious optimism that Smith will continue his playing career rather than retiring. After the season, it was reported that Smith was finished with his career, but ever since then, the 49ers have continuously contacted Smith about coming back next season. It should also be said that Smith has been working out regularly at the 49ers’ facility and he is reportedly in excellent shape.

Although the 49ers will likely not win the Super Bowl this year given their many needs and the uncertainty on their offense, Smith could easily come back and play for pride. In 2014, Smith had 43 total tackles as well as five sacks. He did that without much talent around him. With the 49ers getting healthier and Aldon Smith looking to play a full season, Smith’s numbers could very well improve if he does come back in 2015.
