Diamondbacks to wear throwback unis on Thursdays this season
By Will Osgood
The Arizona Diamondbacks are taking ‘Throwback Thursday’ to its logical conclusion, announcing Thursday they will wear throwback uniforms for their Thursday home games this year.
Throwback Thursday is mainly a Twitter thing, but it has its legs outside of social media — as proved by the Arizona Diamondbacks. In an announcement on Thursday, the team stated that they will institute a “Throwback Thursday” uniform for all home games played on Thursdays this coming season.
It’s a bit fitting that they chose to do so this year as well given that former Ace Randy Johnson, who was really co-Ace with Curt Schilling when the Diamondbacks had their magical World Series win over the New York Yankees in 2001, is being inducted into the Baseball Hall of Fame in July.
After dominating Game 6 to extend the series to a seventh game, Randy Johnson took over for Curt Schilling in the penultimate inning to ensure the D-Backs would have the opportunity to see this moment:
It is those uniforms, which the team wore from 1998 till 2006, that the Diamondbacks will wear on Thursdays in 2015. Beyond honoring the championship team and their Hall of Fame pitcher, it is possible the D-Backs are also attempting to strike up some magic, circa 2001 style.
Though the Diamondbacks do not have an extensive history–they were an expansion franchise in 1993–this is the sixth “throwback” jersey they have worn in their short franchise history.
Many of those were throwbacks to past Arizona baseball teams, not of their own franchise, as they have had just three different logos and uniform combinations in their relatively short history.
