For those of you that do the bracket games, I will unveil all of my picks by Wednesday night. For those of you that play the round by round games, I will also put my picks out there after every round as well. There will be something for everyone!
In the preview, I will give you a favorite, and dark horse team, which would be a four seed or higher than could win the region. A team to watch for, overseeded and underseeded teams, and of course, a double digit seed most likely to win one or more games.
We will get started where the basketball universe begins and ends this year, and that is wherever Kentucky is. That would be the Midwest regional.
Favorite: If a team is 34-0, and they aren’t the favorite to win a region, something is wrong. Kentucky if the favorite of most, including Vegas, to win the entire thing,
Watch out for: Notre Dame. The Irish showed what can happen when they get hot by winning the ACC Tournament. A lot of people are predicting carnage in Omaha, so the Irish could have an easy road to the regional final.
Dark Horse: Maryland. The Terrapins are underseeded at a four, and there is a strong liklihood that they won’t have to face West Virginia in the second round. Maryland will be Kentucky’s first real test since December (sorry Arkansas and Georgia).
Begging To Be Upset: Kansas. It’s not all their fault. Losing Cliff Alexander is a huge blow if he is not re-instated before Sunday. Add to that the fact that Wichita State is likely waiting for them on Sunday. You know, the team that has been snubbed by Kansas for the better part of the last three decades for a home and home series. You know they want this. Shocker fans could have trouble getting tickets though. There is still some bad blood between Creighton fans and Wichita State.
Overseeded: West Virginia. Yes, the Big 12 was tough, but the Mountaineers were only 2-5 against the top three teams in the conference. Sometimes it seems as if the committee puts in a couple of questionable five seeds just to see a 12 beat them. If they do, I’m okay with that. It is marketing genius.
Underseeded: There are a couple, but Wichita State is the most glaring one. The are 15th in the RPI, and 13th in BPI. The Shockers probably should have been at least a five seed. Maybe getting knocked out as a one seed in the second round last year was in the committee’s mind. It shouldn’t have been. They loss to a grossly underseeded Kentucky team.
Cinderella: Texas. Yes, I know Buffalo is the popular pick, and I like them to beat West Virginia. But I also don’t see them beating Maryland. Texas has the best chance to win more than one game as a double digit seed. They have a better shot at beating Notre Dame than Buffalo has at beating Maryland.
Come back for all of the regional capsules, the picks for the First Four, and of course, the bracket picks!
