New York jets sign Buster Skrine (four years, $25 million)

The Jets really needed cornerback help this offseason and invested a lot of money in the position by signing Darrelle Revis and Antonio Cromartie to big deals. But the team’s first move was a head-scratcher, as they brought in Buster Skrine who wasn’t even average for the Cleveland Browns over the past two seasons.

Skrine was Pro Football Focus‘ 82nd-ranked cornerback in 2014, while being penalized and NFL-high 17 times. He allowed eight touchdowns (that’s a lot), but that was actually an improvement on his performance in 2013, when he allowed nine. PFF gave him a coverage grade of -5.5 in 2014 and -8.5 in 2013.

So, yeah, he’s not impressive but the Jets gave him $13 million in guaranteed money anyway.

There are some positives with Skrine, as he has never missed a game in his four-year career, and the 25-year-old will be able to learn from playing with Revis.

Unfortunately, at 5-foot-9 and 185 pounds, Skrine really belongs as a slot corner but he will be getting paid like a No. 2 guy. Jets fans better be hoping the diminutive defensive back lives up to his contract.
