P.K. Subban fined $3,000 for diving/embellishing against the Ottawa Senators
Montreal Canadiens defenseman P.K. Subban has been fined $3,000 for diving/embellishing against the Ottawa Senators.
For the third time this season, Montreal Canadiens defenseman P.K. Subban has been given a slap on the wrist for diving/embellishing.
Under NHL Rule 64, the third time a player is cited for diving/embellishing by the league results in a $3,000 fine. The first incident Subban was noted for diving by the league was back on January 6 against the Tampa Bay Lightning, which resulted in just a warning. Then, Subban was cited a second time on January 29 against the New York Rangers, which resulted in a $2,000 fine.
Here is a video of the incident in which league cited P.K. Subban for diving/embellishing in a game on March 12 against the Ottawa Senators.
It isn’t much, but you can see Subban goes down just a bit too easily after he realizes that he’s beat and there is a two-on-one going the other way. You can also see the Ottawa player release his stick rather quickly to make sure he doesn’t take a hooking penalty. Subban is a big boy, he has the strength to stay on his feet there.

Trying to sell penalties is all well and good and it is part of the game, there are many players in the NHL that do it. Still, there is a very fine line between trying to sell a penalty and embellishing. When you fall down to the ice the very instant you get touched, that’s embellishment.
Obviously, we’ve seen P.K. do this on multiple occasions. You can understand that he’s trying to help his team by drawing penalties, but he just makes it so obvious that he’s embellishing and the league has no choice but to hand out some supplementary discipline. P.K. is way too good of a player to be seen flopping on the ice all the time, and that is what the league is attempting to remove from the game.
Just play your game P.K., the penalties will take care of themselves.
