Two months after being hired, Chicago Bears head coach John Fox is looking to bring some philosophical changes to the organization.
According to a report from Michael C. Wright of ESPN.com, Fox is looking to tweak Chicago’s conditioning program after the team was devastated by injuries during a nightmare 2014 season. Fox believes the new conditioning regimen will help wide receiver Alshon Jeffery in particular.
"I really liked Alshon coming out [of college]One of the things I’d say is we had a lot of soft-tissue injuries last year as a football team. We’ve kind of changed philosophically in the weight room. I think you’ll see we’re going to do things a lot different from offseason conditioning, the approach to how we handle that. I don’t think we had a soft-tissue injury a year ago in Denver other than one particular guy.”"
In a more curious comment, Fox suggested that Jeffery has been out of shape at some points in his career.
"“I think [the new conditioning approach] will help him. There have been times in his career when he might have been a little bit overweight, but obviously a beast as far as size, and a guy we’re looking forward to getting to know better.”"
Jeffery finished the 2014 season with 85 receptions for 1,133 yards and 10 touchdowns, but had to struggle through lingering hamstring issues for most of the season. As good as his 2014 season was, Jeffery did suffer a drop in overall yards and yards per reception from his breakout 2013 campaign.
This is a huge year for Jeffery in multiple regards. With Brandon Marshall traded away to the New York Jets, Jeffery will have to prove he can handle the duties of a No. 1 wide receiver.
Chicago has also not yet approached Jeffery about an extension, making this a contract year for him. The Bears are in for a lengthy rebuild, but Jeffery should certainly figure into their future plans with another stellar year.
If Fox is correct in his assessment about his conditioning, Jeffery could transform from a very good receiver to one of the top five at his position in the NFL.
