Manchester United is ready to make a massive bid in an attempt to lure superstar forward Cristiano Ronaldo away from Real Madrid, according to a report from the Daily Express.
Ronaldo is set for a potential move after talks for a new contract with Real Madrid stalled. Manchester United is reportedly ready to offer £14 million per season and up to £80 million total.
As great as Ronaldo has been for Real Madrid, the club would be hard-pressed to decline such a massive offer. Manchester City also has money to spend and could be in the mix for Ronaldo’s services.
Manchester United had a terrible season by its standards in 2013-14, finishing in seventh place with 64 points. The Red Devils are much improved this season under new manager Louis Van Gaal, but still trails Chelsea by eight points for first place in the Premier League.
Van Gaal has £100 million to make a splash this offseason and get Manchester United back to seriously contending for domestic and international titles. Adding one of the best two players in the world would certainly provide that splash and could be a wise move for the Red Devils.
A Manchester United attack with Ronaldo, Wayne Rooney and Radamel Falcao would be one of the most potent in Europe. Ronaldo scored 84 goals between 2003-2009 with Manchester United, leading the club to three straight Premier League titles.
Real Madrid will active in the transfer window and should be able to bring enough in to replace Ronaldo. Some of the money could be used for a long-term extension for Gareth Bale.
