St. John’s and Steve Lavin have mutually agreed to part ways. Who will be the new head coach to run the program?
Just a few days ago, Steve Lavin and St. John’s were talking about a possible contract extension. Instead the two are parting ways. Some people believed that the two sides were going to agree on a new deal, while others believed he was on the way out. The conflicting reports started circulating around the head coach after the team was ousted by San Diego State in the first round of the NCAA tournament.
Lavin’s future was in limbo and the two sides were negotiating a new deal, but it sounds like they both have agreed to part ways. Lavin had led St. John’s for the last 5 seasons and was entering his final year of his 6-year contract. He has an 81-55 record as the Red Storm head coach. Lavin was the head coach for UCLA from 1996-2003 before joining ESPN as a broadcaster.

Lavin had approached television networks about potential job opportunities and many alumni had voiced their displeasure with Lavin.
“Coach Lavin returned high expectations to our men’s basketball program and represented St. John’s in a positive way,” said St. John’s Athletic Director Chris Monasch via NY Dialy News. “We appreciate his commitment to the program and to our student-athletes over the past five years. Our student-athletes represented the University well, especially our five-member senior class who excelled on the court, inside the classroom and within the community.”
“I enjoyed celebrating our student-athletes’ accomplishments in my first year at St. John’s,” said Conrado “Bobby” Gempesaw, Ph.D., President, St. John’s University. “We look forward to building on this foundation as we strive to continue the tradition of success that the St. John’s basketball program has achieved for more than 100 years.”
