The NFL Draft is right around the corner, and that means teams like the Chargers are either doing due diligence on Marcus Mariota or are really interested.

With the NFL Draft just a month away at the end of April, teams are starting to either lock down their draft plans or head out on dream scouting trips to do their due diligence. That’s what San Diego Chargers fans are wondering with news that the team is setting up a scouting visit with Marcus Mariota next month.

According to NFL Network’s Albert Breer, the Chargers don’t seem to be in any rush to workout Marcus Mariota but there is no doubt some interest that is going to be explored.

It’s interesting to note how late the Chargers are looking at Mariota, which could suggest a number of different things. What is most likely suggests isn’t outright interest in Mariota but an interest in his skills so that they can be compared to other prospects on their draft board.

Philip Rivers has made it known that he’s going to play out his contract and might end up leaving San Diego if things bottom out. Naturally, San Diego is going to be in need of a quarterback of the future but they need to start getting into that mindset even if Rivers stays.

Drafting Mariota would be a steal for the Chargers, but scouting a guy who is supposed to be a top prospect and comparing him to the guy you want is a good way of feeling out the quarterback class and landing on the guy you really want.

That’s what the strategy seems to be with the Chargers, and it’s a wise one to put into action. No one is forcing out Rivers and no one is making him feel like he’s unwanted. But San Diego needs to make sure they have their ducks in a row and that starts with looking at Mariota and applying that scouting report to other prospects that will be available deeper in the draft.
