West Virginia chose to foul senior Emily Leer at the end of their game to give her chance to get to 1,000 career points.

So there’s no sportsmanship in modern sports huh? Tell that to Emily Leer, the Villanova senior who looked to be done in her quest for a 1,000 point career. Her team was losing 73-67 with 12 seconds to go in their Women’s NIT game on Sunday.

They were going to lose. And then despite the six-point lead, West Virginia coach Mike Carey chose to foul Leery. It seemed like a quizzical move. No one in the stands knew what was happening.

You can check out the video here.

It seemed that even Leery’s teammates were mostly ambivalent to the development. Except that Villanova made a conscious effort to get the ball to Leery so that they could foul her and send her to the free throw line.

It seems that after Villanova fouled a West Virginia player in hopes of stretching the contest in last gasp comeback effort, Villanova’s coach, Harry Perretta–who just finished his 37th season at the helm of the Villanova women’s program–had a word with West Virginia’s Carey.

It didn’t appear that Perretta was trying to persuade Carey, but likely just making him aware of the situation. It may have been something the two spoke about prior to the game’s beginning.

It was choreographed, of this there seems little doubt. Leery had 999 points going into the free throw. She hit the first and ended her career with 1,000 career points.

Leer scored 29 points on the night, making her final game a quite impressive effort just to get to the 1,000 point level. And it almost won Villanova their quarterfinal matchup against the Mountaineers.
