Alonzo Mourning: Michael Jordan would average 50 per game today
By Sam Richmond
Alonzo Mourning believes Michael Jordan would be nearly unstoppable if he played under today’s NBA rules.
During his hall-of-fame career, Michael Jordan was a scoring machine. He averaged a ridiculous 30.1 points per game en route to winning six NBA championships and five league MVPs.

However, fellow NBA legend Alonzo Mourning believes Jordan would have been capable of much more had he played in today’s era.
During an appearance on Fox Sports’ Garbage Time, Mourning told host Katie Nolan that he believes Jordan could have averaged 50 points per game today.
This isn’t the first time we’ve heard something like this in regards to Jordan. MJ himself told USA Today in 2010 that he believes he would have been able to score 100 points in a game if he played today.
Sure, Jordan would have been more effective in today’s game with it being less physical and the rules favoring offensive players more today than ever before.
But let’s not get carried away here. It’s absurd to suggest that Jordan could score 50 points on a nightly basis.
Think about all the incredible scorers of the past decade, such as LeBron James, Kevin Durant and Kobe Bryant. Obviously, none of those guys have come even remotely close to averaging 50 points per game. That’s because averaging 50 points per game today isn’t possible, given the pace of the game.
We understand the idea behind Mourning’s statement — Jordan would dominate if he played today — but, no, he would not average 50.
