Raheem Sterling has given an interview and discussed his contract situation for the first time

It seems that every season there is a dragged out contract dilemma for one player or another. The current state of world soccer is heavily driven by big contracts, players getting huge paydays and their agents getting a massive cut. This season’s contract crisis that seems to be dragging on forever is that of Raheem Sterling.

Sterling is 20 years old and his contract break down with Liverpool has been in the media since October of last year. Reports claim that Liverpool offered the young English international  £100,000 a week, a contract offer that Sterling rejected.

The youngster has come under some heavy criticism following his decision to table to contract talks until the end of the season rather than end speculation now. Many people believe the Liverpool star is holding out for more money, which has angered many fans.

However the Jamaican born forward gave an interview to the BBC and played down talk about him being greedy. He insists that his career is measured by trophies and not money, apparently young Raheem doesn’t like how he’s being viewed.

"“It’s never been about money. I talk about winning trophies throughout my career. That’s all I talk about.”"

A lot of people aren’t convinced, and the situation is destined to drag on until the summer. Manchester City, Arsenal, Bayern Munich and Real Madrid all seem to be monitoring Sterling, so you can understand why his head is being turned. However, if he was indeed offer £100,000 a week and is holding out for £150,000 like some reports are claiming, it will be a while before Liverpool fans forgive him.

One thing that Liverpool have going for them in this tug of war is that Sterling isn’t out of contract until the summer of 2017. Meaning they could choose to drag this out for two years, only paying the star £35,000 while doing so. In addition to that, rules dictate that even if a club snatch him up when his contract does expire in 2017, they will be forced to pay Liverpool compensation due to the fact the player will still be under 24. How much compensation would be decided by a tribunal.

One thing is for certain, his recent comments have done nothing to convince people he’s not doing it for the money!
