Chris Jans is out as the head basketball coach at Bowling Green but it has nothing to do with his success on the basketball court.

Bowling Green fired head men’s basketball coach Chris Jans after leading the team to a 21-12 record and a second round appearance in the CIT.

It wasn’t his record, recruiting or anything to do with his on-court behavior, but rather what happened away from the court that led to his termination.

Jans was fired for his off-the-court behavior and the school’s leadership council made the change and is in search of the 17th coach in program history.

According to the school’s website:

"“Jans was terminated following an investigation into his recent public conduct. The University concluded that Jans’ public conduct failed to meet his obligations as a head coach and the expectations that BGSU Athletics has for its coaches.”"

Fox Sports Ohio’s Zac Jackson has more on the situation and tweets Jans was involved in an incident at an off-campus bar the night the season ended.

Jans lost his job, but no charged are currently pending, but things could get worse for Jans because Jackson also tweeted that video of the incident exists.

This is obviously damaging to Jans’ career prospects and his chances of getting a second job in the Division I ranks could hinge on what’s on this cell phone video, if it comes to light.

Jans has made a slow and steady climb up the coaching ranks from Division III Elmhurst College in suburban Illinois where he began his college coaching career in 1991 and has stops at community and junior colleges before landing assistant coaching jobs in the Missouri Valley Conference with Illinois State in 2004 and Wichita State in 2007 before landing his first DI head coaching job with Bowling Green in 2014.

Who knows what is going to show up on this cell phone video and we can only speculate if he was drunk in public and involved in a physical altercation with a patron of the bar or just exchanging some language that is unbecoming of a head coach of a college basketball team. But you can’t fault Bowling Green for making a swift decision in terminating his contract and finding a replacement who won’t embarrass the university and the basketball program with his behavior.

A national search is underway and assistant coach Mark Downey is taking over the day-to-day operations until a new coach is hired.
