Harry Kane has been again nominated for the English Premier League Player of the Month award for March, and if he wins, he will be the first player in the history of the league to win three back-to-back accolades.

Only four players have ever won back-to-back Player of the Month awards in the history of the Premier League, and the previous winners are three of the best players to ever grace the game – Robbie Fowler, Dennis Bergkamp and Cristiano Ronaldo.

Liverpool’s Robbie Fowler had arguably the season of his career, scoring 28 goals in the 1995/96 campaign, three behind Alan Shearer, and collecting back-to-back Player of the Month awards in December and January.

Dennis Bergkamp won two consecutive player of the month awards in August and September of 1997, a season in which he scored 16 goals and helped earn Arsenal its first English Premier League title.

Cristiano Ronaldo was the third player to achieve this feat in November and December of 2006, where he scored 17 goals that season and helped pave the way for Manchester United’s first of three successive league titles.

Tottenham’s Harry Kane has been in sensational form this season, racking up 19 goals in 26 Premier League appearances, which is what forced Roy Hodgson to hand him his international debut for England last week.

Kane appeared as a substitute and continued his messiah-like form in front of goal by taking just 79 seconds to open his account for England, latching onto a cross at the back post and heading it beyond the Lithuania goalkeeper.

The six players nominated for the March Premier League Player of the Month award are Olivier Giroud, Marouane Fellaini, Gabriel Agbonlahor, Francis Coquelin, Jordan Henderson and Harry Kane.

The Tottenham striker has netted three times for Mauricio Pochettino’s side in March, including a hat-trick in a 4-3 victory over Leicester City.

Harry Kane is walking in the footsteps of greatness, enjoying the kind of season that has produced some of the world’s finest players, and is a hot favorite to clinch his third consecutive award and make history.

Olivier Giroud has matched Kane’s March goalscoring record with each players recording five goals apiece, and is the most legitimate threat to Kane’s potential hat-trick of honors.

Winning these individual awards is a great symbol of measuring the success of any one player at a particular moment in time, granted. However, there is a bigger question: has England stumbled upon its next big superstar or is Harry Kane’s record season destined to be a one-hit wonder?
