Professional cyclist, Jesse Sergent, was clipped by a car during the Tour of Flanders Sunday.

Cycling can be a more dangerous sport than most people realize. Riders can often reach speeds ranging around 30-40mph, while riding up against each others wheel and wearing almost nothing to protect their bodies other than a helmet.

For Trek Factory Racing Cyclist Jesse Sergent, it wasn’t other bikes that caused him to wreck Sunday.

During a stage of the Tour of Flanders, Sergent was in a breakaway group of riders going for the victory.

As Sergent rounded a turn, he was clipped by a team aid car that assists cyclists. It was enough to cause Sergent to wipe out.

The impact caused Sergent to go sliding across the asphalt and right in front of the other riders, which posed even more problems.

While the car had little to no room around the turn because of the riders, it should have waited behind until a more clear time to pass.

Unfortunately, it didn’t, and Sergent, who was leading the race, had to leave the race with a broken collarbone.

He’s extremely lucky that the injuries he sustained weren’t far worse after being hit by a car.
