In case you missed it, Wisconsin Badgers’ head coach Bo Ryan made some remarks following a 68-63 Duke victory in the National Championship that may have ruffled some feathers. In fact, it irked one man in particular: Duke’s head coach, Mike Krzyzewski.
Ryan had this to say in his postgame press conference, “All the seniors that I’ve had — hard to say the word. But every player that’s played through the program, OK, we don’t do a rent-a-player. You know what I mean? Try to take a fifth-year guy. That’s OK. If other people do that, that’s OK. I like trying to build from within. It’s just the way I am. And to see these guys grow over the years and to be here last year and lose a tough game, boom, they came back.”
This was an obvious jab at the talented freshmen that litter Duke’s starting five as well as the first few that come off the bench. Ryan basically called out how college coaches are starting to rent players for one year instead of developing them for four like he does.
The five-time national champion head coach heard today about what Ryan said following the loss and was a little upset.
Coach K appeared on “CBS This Morning” and said, “Duke doesn’t rent a player. All of these kids… my guys are great. They go to school, they love Duke, they live with the other students, and the rent-a-thing is kind of harsh.”
Although there will be a handful of kids like Jahlil Okafor, Tyus Jones and Justise Winslow that will be heading for greener pastures next year, the Blue Devils have done things right for so long.
If you’re Coach K, you have to just put up your hand with five rings on it and call it a day.
