New Player Voted Awards for the NBA at the end of season

NBAPA will host their own awards at the Las Vegas Summer League called the Players Choice Awards 2015. This will stand alongside the current media members only voted MVP an other end of year awards.

More from NBA

To be completely clear these will be two separate awards… Prevoiusly players the MVP award was voted by players, but that changed after the 1980 – 1981 season.

The issue of players not voting for MVP started to become public after Kevin Durant spoke outwardly about lack of player voice in the award. Here is what Michelle Roberts had to say about the new awards via USA Today

"“This program was created at your request to recognize outstanding performance of your peers, on and off the court,” Roberts wrote. “No one knows better than you what it takes to shine.”"

This is yet another chapter in the build up to the story that will be the new CBA. It is completely unclear as to what Michelle Roberts is trying to do. Her purpose of course is to represent players and their best interests. To what means she uses to do this leaves a bit to desired. Her issue recent foe has been the media, which I presume is her stretching process before she has to use actual muscle and take on the owners.

I’m all behind the players receiving a vote for the end of year awards, but creating an alternate award is not the answer. She has established herself as aggressive, which is a good thing because the owners will try to grab every penny. The problem with aggression is when it comes to action you need a little muscle to back you up. Michelle Roberts can swear up and down that she won’t need the media during the inevitable lock-out but the truth is, the media will be all thats left when basketball stops.

Public opinion will have it’s moment in the sun, and when it does it would be better if it is in support of your cause.
