By Kris Whelan
Jordan Spieth had a great opening day and nearly set the record for a single round at any major in addition to what would be a record for the Masters.
Golfer Jordan Spieth has had an absolutely astonishing day during the first round of The Masters, nearly breaking records for fun and leaving a lot of players in his wake. The 21 year old started off in steady form and consistently sunk birdies all day, hitting an amazing eight birdies in his first 14 holes.

Unfortunately Spieth bogeyed on the 15th hole, ending his dream and hope of tying or setting the record. He ended up finishing at 8-under par for the day, one stroke shy of the record.
Greg Norman leveled the record with a round of 63, a score he set on the opening day in 1996. The original record was set 10 years prior by Nick Price. The fact that the record stood for 29 years and hasn’t been equaled for 19 is absolutely astounding and really puts in to perspective how impressive this 21 year old kid is.
Spieth started the day with a par, and hit birdies on holes 2, 4, 8, 9, 10, 12, 13 and 14. The day could have been even more astonishing for the youngster as he came very close to making an eagle. He found himself in the trees and in a pretty awkward situation, however the American cut loose and sent the ball towards the hole in an improbable way. Unfortunately for Spieth, he hit the pole and the ball rolled a few yards away, but he managed to finish it with a birdie.
He also added a birdie on the last hole of the day.
Whether Spieth can keep up the pace and make a charge for the green jacket remains to be seen, it would be the first major win of his career. One thing is for sure, his opening day round will live on for years to come.
The fact that Spieth is only 21 is the most impressive thing, if he could manage to win this tournament it would be a marker set down for the rest of the golfing world. It could provide Rory McIlroy a real challenger for the next big star of golf to carry the torch from Tiger Woods.
Even if he doesn’t continue his fantastic form people will still be looking at this kid for years to come and expecting similar brilliance.
